Records and research methods
Depending on the place and period, research may use US federal and state censuses, vital and church records, newspapers, city directories, immigration and passenger lists, naturalisation files, probate, land, military and cemetery sources. Overseas work may continue into British civil and parish records, European civil registration, local church material, archive catalogues and direct correspondence with record custodians.
DNA can be used alongside those records to group relatives, reconstruct descendant families and test a proposed connection. Record availability differs by state, country, period and community, so every project begins with a specific question rather than a promise that one database will contain the answer.
How remote research works
- Define the question. We identify the person, relationship or migration problem the first stage should address.
- Review the starting evidence. I check the records, trees, DNA information and earlier research already available.
- Research across jurisdictions. I follow the family through the relevant US, Canadian, British or European record systems.
- Correlate the result. Dates, places, occupations, relatives, associates and DNA evidence are compared before a conclusion is stated.

The estimated timetable depends on record access, archive or church responses, the number of jurisdictions and whether DNA match trees must be reconstructed. Prices on this site are shown in GBP, and the scope and cost are agreed before work begins.
What you receive
The agreed output may include a written report, source citations, record images or references, a research log, a family tree or relationship chart and recommendations for unresolved questions. Where the evidence is incomplete, I distinguish firm findings, probable conclusions and open hypotheses.
